During the Annual Meeting of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments on January 29, the Town of Taylorsville formally recognized Dr. Glenn P. Deal, Sr. Current Mayor Guy E. Barriger presented Dr. Deal with a Distinguished Public Service Award along with the gavel Dr. Deal used during his tenure as Mayor.

Dr. Deal served as an elected Town official for a total of 14 years in the capacity of Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tempore, and Town Commissioner. Dr. Deal also served on numerous state and local boards and commissions. The service award states, "It is with grateful and sincere appreciation for his loyalty and leadership over these years that the Town of Taylorsville Board of Commissioners wishes to recognize Dr. Deal's achievements as a public official on the local, regional, state, and national levels of government…Dr. Deal's exemplary career serves as an example to all that choose to serve the public." The Town Board of Commissioners during their December Regular Meeting with a vote of 2 in favor and 1 opposed adopted the Distinguished Public Service Award.

Mayor Guy E. Barriger noted during the presentation, "Dr. Deal has done many great things, not only for Taylorsville, but for the region, the State of North Carolina, and the United States. We are proud he is from Taylorsville, one of our own." Mayor Barriger also presented Mrs. Rosemary Deal, Dr. Deal's wife, with a gift of appreciation for her many years of community service and "putting up with Doc for all these years."

WHO HAS FAITHFULLY AND DILIGENTLY SERVED the Town of Taylorsville for a total of fourteen years. It is with grateful and sincere appreciation for his loyalty and leadership over these years that the Town of Taylorsville Board of Commissioners wishes to recognize Dr. Deal's achievements as a public official on the Local, Regional, State, and National levels of government;

BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Taylorsville, North Carolina to recognize and honor the dedication of Dr. Deal in serving his community as Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tempore, and Town Commissioner;

WHEREAS, the Town of Taylorsville, throughout its history, has been privileged to have many individuals who have made us justifiably proud. Trust, integrity, responsibility, and concern for their fellow citizens and the community as a whole have guided their decisions and their actions. Dr. Deal is truly one of these individuals;

WHEREAS, Dr. Deal's exemplary career serves as an example to all that choose to serve the public. He has devoted his time, energy, and talents to the Town, County, Region, State, and Nation serving with unfailing integrity, dignity, and thoughtfulness;

WHEREAS, Dr. Deal's numerous contributions have improved our quality of life, our economic competitiveness, and our overall pride in community. The spirit and vitality of his ideas, outstanding professional performance, exemplary personal character, strong and fair leadership, and sincere respect and concern for the people of the Town of Taylorsville, Alexander County, the Catawba Valley, the State of North Carolina, and the United States of America have been evident throughout his career in public service;

WHEREAS, Dr. Deal's overriding goal has been to preserve, enhance, and protect the quality of life in the Town of Taylorsville. Some of his numerous accomplishments, all of which are too lengthy to list, include: the development of Matheson Park, increasing the Town's water storage and wastewater treatment capacity, securing numerous grants and low interest loans for service projects, providing public utilities to industry that has ensured a stable employment base, improved land use planning and environmental protection, progressive improvements for the Town's Police and Public Works Departments, the promotion of professional local government management, ensuring the welfare of all Town employees, and much, much more;

WHEREAS, the Town of Taylorsville, the Region, State, and Nation have benefited from the innovative and progressive leadership of Dr. Deal. He has not wavered in bringing answers and solutions to those he has served for many years. His demeanor and character have fostered the active engagement of citizens from all walks of life, institutions, businesses, volunteer organizations, and local governments throughout the Catawba Valley and State to help in meeting new challenges and opportunities. The cohesion he inspired highlighted our strengths, combined our talents, and pooled our resources. His emotional and personal dedication to his community is innate and the citizens will continue to benefit far beyond his official length of service in public office;

WHEREAS, Dr. Deal has held many positions, which have benefited the Town of Taylorsville, Alexander County, the Catawba Valley, the State of North Carolina, and the United States of America - Mayor of the Town of Taylorsville, Mayor Pro-Tempore of the Town of Taylorsville, Town Commissioner of the Town of Taylorsville, President of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, Member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina League of Municipalities, Member of the North Carolina Board of Health, Delegate to the White House Conference on Balanced Growth, Member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regional Councils, Chairman of the North Carolina Joint Regional Forum, Chairman of the Alexander County Board of County Commissioners, Member of the Wilkes County Board of Education, Chairman of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments, Vice Chairman of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments, Secretary of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments, Taylorsville's Delegate to the Western Piedmont Council of Governments Policy Board, Member of the Board of Directors of Foothills Mental Health, Member of the Board of Directors of the Hiddenite Center, President of the Taylorsville Rotary Club, and many, many more governmental, civic, and professional organizations. Dr. Deal was selected in 1975 as North Carolina's Most Outstanding County Commissioner, named Alexander County Citizen of the Year in 1976, and is a member of North Carolina's Order of the Long Leaf Pine;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Dr. Glenn P. Deal, Sr., a dedicated public servant, has been, and will continue to be, a pillar of the Taylorsville Community through his recognized leadership in the public sector, we, the Town of Taylorsville Board of Commissioners hereby present this Distinguished Public Service Award for his outstanding service and dedication to his fellow man and the same is by motion duly, passed, and recorded upon the public record of the Town of Taylorsville, North Carolina.

FURTHER, this Award conveys the Town of Taylorsville's best wishes for the future with his wife, Rosemary, children, and grandchildren.
